Cam score 4 tries but still lose to Guildford

Coach Ben Glossop was aware of the challenge his side faced when he was forced to pick a relatively inexperienced pack for the local derby against in form Guildford. However this did not seem to be an issue when, after just 2 mins, the black and ambers took the lead when quick hands saw winger Dan Lewis race over for the opening score.

Guildford were not slow to respond and took the lead after 5 mins with a converted try following some loose play by Cam. This set the pattern for most of the first half and with the mobile Guildford pack punching holes in the Cam defence to score a further 4 tries before Dan Lewis, having taken play from the Cam half to within 10m of the visitors line, was on hand to take the pass from the quick tap penalty conceded by Guildford, to score a try on the stroke of half time which was converted by Dave Wood making the score at the break 12-31.

Cam started the second half with much more intent and with Guildford conceding multiple penalties in their half in an effort  to halt the black and amber attacks it was only a matter of time before they were forced to play with 14 men for 10 mins. Cam then scored their 3rd try, again from a quickly taken penalty by TT who managed to flip the ball up to no 8 Dave Rees  who crashed over wide out after 55 mins.

Guildford were not to be outdone however and following some poor Cam tackling  extended their lead with a converted try on 65 mins.  The spectators were then treated to an early pantomine sketch when their scrum half was binned. Cam had been awarded a penalty close to their line and with 2 successful quick tap and goes already in the game scrum half TT was eager to repeat the move, however he was thwarted by a large Guildford forward running off with the ball. The crowd then witnessed TT, all  5′ 2” of him, struggling to take the ball from the 6′ plus forward  without success, getting a yellow card and the penalty reversed – surely one of the more comic scenes the supporters of both sides will witness this season.

With Cam down to 14 Guildford scored a further try on 75 mins but, not to be outdone Cam came back on 77 mins when Ed Lea made a break through the middle and managed eventually to recover his little chip ahead to score Cams 4th try making the final score 22-43 and giving them at least a bonus point.

For the most part this was a lack lustre show from the black and ambers and they will need to tighten up their game significantly if they are to get back on the winning trail next week @ Bognor.

On a brighter note the 2′s got back to winning ways with a 29-19 win over Warlingham.
