Russ Kirby, who props for the 1stXV during the winter, is off to Sweden this month as a member of the Great Britain squad competing at the IPF Powerlifting World ‘Classic’ Cup.
To quote Russ this is weightlifting ‘in the raw’ as competitors are not allowed supportive lifting suits, knee wraps or other aids. Russ will be competing in the 120kg class on Sunday June 17th and you can keep up to date with his progress by clicking here
For those of you who don’t know Russ, one of his many claims to fame is that while enjoying a quiet romantic weekend at Pennyhill Park he found his way to the gym which is used by the England squad. A list in the gym showed Andrew Sheridan as the top lifter together with the weights he achieved – under the watchful eye of a member of the gym staff Russ casually went ahead and outlifted the England prop by a significant margin.
We wish him all the best for June 17th and look forward to watching him putting the younger squad members through their paces next month when pre season conditioning and training starts.
