Camberley RFC Honours Club
It is believed that the Honours Club first met during 1975 although no records were maintained until a minuted meeting was held on June 4th 1977.
In those far off days the concept of ‘Honours’ was introduced by Harry Gibson, Dennis Cowley and Roger Chamberlain – of these rugby club worthies two (Harry and Roger) went on to become Presidents of Camberley RFC.
The Honours Club was formed to ensure inclusion of members of the rugby club who have made significant contributions towards its welfare in all aspects and in any capacity whatsoever over the years. They are thus true club supporters not just because of their membership but because they understand inherently what the rugby club is all about and where its priorities lie. Thus they surely at all times have the very best interests of Camberley RFC at heart.
Members are elected following recommendation then approval from existing members. The Honours Club has no constitution, is no way secretive, nor does it exist to gather funds as in many organisations. It does hold modest reserves in order to assist in the event of a deserved rugby need should such an occasion arise.
From those early 1975 days Harry Gibson was elected as Chairman and Dennis Cowley as Secretary. When Dennis moved away to Kent in 1979 Neil Doody assumed the Secretary role which he retains to this day. Harry was chairman from 1975 – 1980 when he departed to Holland at which time Bill Gill took over until 1988. Then Roger Berry (another CRFC President) took over as Chairman until 1995 at which time Neil Doody, the current Chairman, took on the post in addition to continuing as Secretary.
Although virtually all of our Club Presidents Chairmen and Secretaries have also been members of the Honours Club it should be stressed that membership is most certainly very much widened in order to be representative of all members of Camberley RFC.
The Honours Club meets on an informal basis providing counsel and support to every area of the rugby club as may be needed. During our 35 years existence we have constantly strived to maintain the well being of the rugby club as a priority and certainly intend this to continue in the long term.
In a nutshell the Camberley RFC Honours Club is an informal club of people who have made a significant contribution to the club itself, in any capacity, over a period of time – club members who inherently understand what the rugby club is about and its priorities and alsways have the best interests of CRFC at heart.
